Seasonal estimates of densities and predation rates of cetaceans in the Ligurian Sea, northwestern Mediterranean Sea: an initial examination

چکیده
The Ligurian Sea is one of the most attractive areas for cetaceans in Mediterranean Sea, and now included a Marine Protected Area, Pelagos Sanctuary. Despite lower species diversity than other parts world, because their abundance, are thought to represent significant consumers this ecosystem. Surveys were conducted within Sanctuary from 2001 2004. Densities five species: striped dolphin (Stenella coeruleoalba); fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus); sperm (Physeter macrocephalus); long-finned pilot (Globicephala melas); Risso’s (Grampus griseus), estimated converted biomass. Total biomass density was as 93kg km-2 (CV=28%) winter (October March) 509kg (CV=16%) summer (April September). Daily predation rates by 2.9kg d-1 winter, increasing 10.4kg summer, corresponding total annual ingestion 2.4t y-1. primary production required be 12.6gC m-2 y-1, 6- 15% net known area. Estimated cetacean on fish similar reported fisheries landings, nevertheless, management artisanal accurate quantification resources they exploit will necessary responsible Area.

cement is an essential ingredient in the concrete buildings. for production of cement considerable amount of fossil fuel and electrical energy is consumed. on the other hand for generating one tone of portland cement, nearly one ton of carbon dioxide is released. it shows that 7 percent of the total released carbon dioxide in the world relates to the cement industry. considering ecological issu...
Floating debris in the Ligurian Sea, north-western Mediterranean.
Results from visual sightings of large floating debris are presented, taken in the Ligurian Sea, a sub-basin of the north-western Mediterranean Sea which belongs to the recently stated "Cetacean Sanctuary". Data have been collected during three oceanographic cruises, during the summer of 1997 and 2000. Results for the 1997 data suggest a debris density of the order of 15-25 objects km(-2), whil...
متن کاملAerial survey abundance estimates of the loggerhead sea turtle Caretta caretta in the Pelagos Sanctuary, northwestern Mediterranean Sea
Aerial line transect surveys, totalling 16 590 km, were performed in winter and summer 2009 in the Pelagos Sanctuary, NW Mediterranean. A total of 207 loggerhead sea turtles were sighted, with only 9 sightings during the winter. In this season average raw ‘surface’ density (i.e. animals at or near the surface) was 0.002 turtles km–2, and on the basis of line-transect analysis, we estimated 237 ...
متن کاملMonitoring Winter and Summer Abundance of Cetaceans in the Pelagos Sanctuary (Northwestern Mediterranean Sea) Through Aerial Surveys
Systematic long-term monitoring of abundance is essential to inform conservation measures and evaluate their effectiveness. To instigate such work in the Pelagos Sanctuary in the Mediterranean, two aerial surveys were conducted in winter and summer 2009. A total of 467 (131 in winter, 336 in summer) sightings of 7 species was made. Sample sizes were sufficient to estimate abundance of fin whale...
متن کاملTrajectory Sonar Perception in the Ligurian Sea
This paper describes a new technique for tracking locally curved unknown objects using sonar. The approach explicitly accounts for relevant robot dynamics. Objects are tracked by looking for temporal sequences of observations that fit a kinematic model. The method is illustrated using data from a synthetic aperture sonar gathered by a BPAUV at NATO SACLANT’s GOATS 2002 experiment in the Liguria...
